Also, if you notice here, the club itself is past parallel (only slightly), but the arms don’t have that “overswung” appearance; they’re still well to the right of the body. The club’s position past parallel is due to an arm-shaft angle that is considerably more acute than the norm, probably because of Hogan’s open left wrist position at the top. You’ll notice, though, that his arms don’t outrun his turn on the way back–that is, they don’t keep going once the turn has stopped.

Pretty sure the vid was made around ‘64 (when they did the Shell’s Wonderful World shoot at Champions), when Ben was about 52 or so.

Ben was very flexible, and he wasn’t much past parallel, certainly not in a way that disconnected his arms from his turn. Also, if you’ll look at some youtube vids of him with irons, you’ll see just how compact he was with the other clubs.

Now, _earlier_ in his career, he was way past parallel, and it hurt him–very much uncontrolled.

Watching Hogan’s swing is akin to looking at a work by Rembrandt: You’re witnessing a true display of beauty and brilliance.

He does this to increase the lag helping to build more pressure resulting in more clubhead speed. The key here is that he does not lose the pressure between the elbows which most amateurs do and he maintains pressure in the triceps which results in the hips being able to control the upper body.Nearly all amateurs control the swing with the upper body.Read his book he states “A strongman could’nt pull his upper arms off his chest “.

He brings it past parallel but he doesnt lose control. Bringing it past parallel isnt an issue if the left arm remains firm and the shoulders turn past 90 degree. But yes, for most people who are not as supple going past parallel is a nono

Just read Hogan’s biography:he really was the Tiger Woods of his day. Admired the time he spent on “Misery Hill.”
It’s great to see his swing on here. I’ve been “coming over the top” a lot on the course and getting into all sorts of trouble. Currently working on bumping that left hip forward just before the top of the backswing. As soon as I do that, ball striking instantly improves.
Still missing left but nearly not as bad. Thanks for posting!

this is one of the grand masters of golf listen and learn a free lesson from a legend i’m guessing this was late 60’s early 70’s look at that shoulder turn for a man of his years it’s amazing there are teenagers that would like his flexibility

It’s bad advice for amateurs because they usually then cast the club from the top (much like what Ben does when he demonstrates “over the top”). Hogan generated a ton of lag and didn’t release his hands til very late so he could afford to overswing a little without the ill-effects.

i don’t understand why he brings the club PAST parallel on his backswing… i always thought that was a big no-no… does anyone know how old ben was in this vid… or the year it was made

1 more thing check out” hip slide” on youtube jim mclean showing hogans-hope this clears it all up for you guys.

if you just rotated your hips in the forward swing you would spin out and hit inconsistant shots that is very true, you need a slight bump forward with the left hip so it stacks over the left knee and ankle and then rotate the hips, its only a small movement until stacking occurs and hogan is doing it in this swing, checkout 1min9 in his swing + you will see it,if you never bumped the hip like this you would spin out, decker + lee you are both correct, just different ways of phrasing.

Hi leedewsbury. The hip slide with Hogan is really more of an illusion from him dropping his right shoulder and moving his left knee towards the target. The left hip moves slightly up and almost immediately around to the back. His hip never moves past the left knee where it would have ended up had there been a slide. Watch the swing from the 1:07 mark and you will see what I mean. Cheers

Honestly. He in my opinion has the best swing golf has seen. Smooth…like Ted williams in baseball, Hogan in golf. Not to take anything away from modern golfers but that guy had skills. Read his Five Lesseons…small book…gold on paper..

Sorry Ben, yeah — pretty decent, but still not as good as Sir Charles Barkley. Now that’s a million dollar golf swing.

i can’t hold this in any longer… to the guy that commented on tiger hittin consistent shots and hogan being inconsistent, do you have even the faintest idea of what you’re talking about? possibly one of the most stupid comments i’ve ever seen. tiger is a great golfer… no arguement. but he’s hits the ball all over the place. hogan hit almost every shot right down the middle. if golf were played only from the T box to the green, nobody else needed to ever show up. inconsistent?

I would take that swing over anybody`s.I see why his name comes up so much in golf instruction.Powerful and fluid.Great video.

to say that Hogan never did [rotate his hips and hit consistent shots] shows your ignorance on the history of golf. Hogan is still revered as thee greatest ball striker of all time. his authoritative, masterfully illustrated instructional entitled “Five Lessons: Modern Fundamentals of Golf” precisely details the importance of lower body power within the sequence of the swing. Tiger uses Hogan’s swing & places so much emphasis lower body turn, his body drops & dips the downswing. Hogan is king!
